If you’re getting dozens of password reset notifications, you’re being attacked

By news@appleinsider.com (Malcolm Owen) Apple users are becoming the target of a new wave of phishing attacks called “MFA Bombing” that relies on user impatience, and a bug in Apple’s password reset mechanism.An example of the Apple ID password reset notificationPhishing attacks often rely on users supplying information to an attacker or allowing them to do something to their account, often via an email, text message, or other messaging means. A recently discovered phishing attack has used a new route to make victims fall for it, by using Apple’s password reset system.Dubbed “MFA Bombing,” “MFA Fatigue,” or “Push Bombing,” the attack detailed by Krebs on Security is an elaborate phishing attack that appears to revolve around a bug in the password reset feature. Victims are inundated by “Reset Password” notifications, including the text “Use this iPhone to reset your Apple ID password,” and the options to allow or reject the request. Leader of counterfeit Apple crime ring sentenced to more than four years

By news@appleinsider.com (William Gallagher) The head of an international gang behind return fraud of 10,000 counterfeit iPhones and iPads, has been sentenced to prison for 51 months.Apple UTC in San Deigo, whose local police force worked on the international caseSome 14 people were involved in the international organization, which ultimately defrauded Apple of at least $6 million. Two of the key figures, brothers Zhimin and Zhiting Liao (aka “Jimmy” and “Tim”), were sentenced in October 2023 to 41 months jail time.Now according to Justice.gov another brother, Zhiwei Liao (aka “Allen”), was sentenced to 51 months as the organizer and leader of an international conspiracy. Alongside the four years and three months of his sentence, Liao was ordered by US District Judge Cynthia Ann Bashant, to surrender over 200 Apple devices, more than $120,000, and to forfeit two residencies.
